Shopify Frontend Developer (Contract)
Remote (Americas)
About Monumental
Monumental is a technical & design studio specializing in Shopify unified commerce. We collaborate with innovative brands to deliver user-centered, conversion-focused digital solutions.
We're part of an exclusive Shopify Plus program, partnering directly with Shopify Account Executives to help merchants migrate to Shopify Plus, B2B, and Retail solutions.
The Opportunity
We're seeking an experienced Shopify frontend developer to join our roster of talent for project-based development work across our e-commerce clients. As consumer expectations for online shopping experiences continue to rise, our clients—ranging from emerging DTC brands to established retailers—need specialized Shopify expertise that balances pixel-perfect implementation with performance, accessibility, and conversion-focused UX. You'll partner with our internal team to translate approved designs into polished, interactive Online Store 2.0 experiences using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
This independent contractor opportunity offers the flexibility to work on diverse Shopify builds and optimizations while maintaining your own schedule and client base.
What We're Looking For
Experience Level: 1–2+ years of hands-on Shopify theme development experience
Core Requirements:
Proven track record in building and customizing Shopify themes with real, client-facing results
Strong command of HTML, CSS, Liquid, and JavaScript best practices — including responsive techniques, accessibility standards, and performance considerations
You use AI development tools like Claude Code or Cursor to enhance your workflow — but you know when to lean on them and when not to (You're not looking for a shortcut; you're looking for leverage)
Proficiency in modern CSS — Grid, Flexbox, custom properties, and cascade management
Solid understanding of Shopify's Online Store 2.0 architecture: sections, blocks, schema, metaobjects, and theme settings
Comfortable working from Figma files as part of design handoff
Experience with modern build tools (Vite, Parcel, or similar)
Knowledgeable in site performance, SEO, and accessibility best practices
Able to test and resolve cross-browser compatibility issues
Technical Knowledge:
Deep familiarity with Shopify's platform constraints and how to work creatively within them
Experience with GitHub — branching, pull requests, and collaborative code workflows
Understanding of e-commerce UX patterns: PDPs, collection pages, cart, checkout flows
Comfortable extending and contributing to shared component libraries
Experience working on a fully distributed, async-first team
Nice-to-haves:
Experience with any of the following: Web Components, React, Vue, Next.js, Hydrogen/Remix, Node.js, Tailwind, Shopify Polaris, Netlify/Serverless Functions, Mechanic, Pipedream, or Airtable.
Primary Responsibilities
Use HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid to build Shopify web elements that match client-approved designs and functionality
